The Basics of Tattoo Aftercare
Here are just some of the basics of tattoo aftercare that we advise our clients to follow:
One of the most important things to remember is to try and avoid direct sun exposure for at least two weeks after getting a tattoo. You know how the San Antonio, Texas, the sun hits us HOT ..HOT. Sunlight can cause fading and discoloration of the ink, so it’s best to keep your tattoo covered and out of direct sunlight. Furthermore, your skin is still repairing itself. It is extra sensitive during this period, so sun exposure can also increase the chances of infection or irritation.
It’s essential to keep your tattoo clean and moisturized at all times to help the healing process. We recommend using a mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water to clean the tattooed area gently. After washing, completely dry the tattoo before applying a thin layer of moisturizer.
During the first to the second week of healing, your tattoo goes through a lot of scabbing and flaking. After that, it is entirely normal, but it’s important not to pick, scratch, or peel at the tattoo in any way. Picking can lead to infection and unwanted scarring of the tattooed area.
We advise against swimming and other water activities for at least two weeks after getting a tattoo. A chlorinated pool or salt water can irritate the tattooed area and cause infection. It helps if you avoid hot tubs or baths for the same reasons.
Nonetheless, showers are fine, but pat the tattoo dry and do not rub it with a towel.
Some tattoo designs may require a touch-up appointment after the initial healing period. Make sure to attend your follow-up appointments for the best results.
Your tattoo heals on its own so trust the process. However, it’s best to let it heal naturally and avoid unnecessary interference.
If you experience any severe skin irritation, redness, or pain in the area of your tattoo, make sure to consult a doctor and follow their advice.
